Located in Christchurch’s Styx Mill area, The Groynes is a popular Christchurch City Council park featuring four dedicated junior fishing lakes.

These lakes have been annually stocked with rainbow trout for the long-running Take a Kid Fishing event, thanks to generous funding from the Take a Kid Fishing Trust. Fish & Game releases the fish into the lakes ahead of the event each year.

While the event draws large crowds, many fish go uncaught and remain in the lakes for months afterwards, offering excellent ongoing fishing opportunities for junior anglers. In addition to the stocked fish, there is also a healthy resident population of brown and rainbow trout from the nearby Otukaikino River.

The area is highly accessible, family-friendly, and ideal for teaching kids to fish in a relaxed, natural setting. It’s important to note that fishing at The Groynes is strictly for anglers under the age of 18. Parents, grandparents, and caregivers are welcome to assist with casting and landing fish, but children must be actively involved in the experience themselves.
