Arms Act changes to benefit game bird hunters

The Government’s Arms Act changes are pragmatic and sensible, says Fish & Game New Zealand.
The Government's new Arms Act improves compliance processes for storage and travel requirements for firearms licence holders, including game bird hunters, and takes a more balanced approach to minor infringements.
"We're pleased to see the Government taking a balanced approach to firearms regulation that recognises the long-standing traditions around hunting and food gathering that many New Zealanders undertake," says Fish & Game Chief Executive Corina Jordan.
"The game bird hunters that I talk to every day are law-abiding, safety-conscious users of firearms for legitimate recreational purposes. These reforms acknowledge that distinction, and we're pleased to see a more nuanced approach that targets criminal activity while reducing unnecessary burden on responsible licence holders," says Jordan.
"We welcome the clarification around overseas travel provisions, which will make it easier for families to come home for Opening Day, for clay target shooters to participate in international competitions and allow overseas-based hunters to enjoy the many opportunities New Zealand offers.
"The introduction of infringement powers and temporary suspensions for low-level non-compliance is a sensible reform that many of our licence holders will appreciate. Under the current system, relatively minor administrative errors – such as failing to notify the regulator of a change of address – can trigger disproportionate responses.
"We also note the introduction of new penalties for unsafe storage of firearms. Our hunters take their responsibilities seriously, and we encourage all licensed firearm owners to ensure they're aware of and meet secure storage requirements.
"Fish & Game looks forward to participating in the six-month select committee process and encourages our licence holders and the wider recreational fishing and hunting community to make submissions.”
