Behind The Scenes At The Montrose Hatchery

  • 1/08/2016

Ever wondered about how a Fish & Game Hatchery works?

FGNZ BrownTroutSpawn16This short video shows the Montrose Hatchery in North Canterbury in operation during a brown trout spawning.

Hatchery Manager Dirk Barr oversees the year-round operation which breeds nearly half a million fish each year at Montrose.

The fish are used to supply restoration projects throughout the South Island, not just in the North Canterbury region.

Requiring daily management and maintainance to ensure the best results, the hatchery is the largest of the two run by North Canterbury Fish & Game and will be joined in the coming years by a third hatchery at Whiskey Creek.
