2026 Late‑Season Fishing Opportunities
With autumn arriving and cooler temperatures setting in, April is the last month to explore some lakes and rivers for trout before they close for winter, making it the perfect time to enjoy late‑season trout and perch fishing. By this time, trout are often in excellent condition, having fed heavily throughout the summer.

Trout fishing in lakes improves significantly in April as cooler weather brings water temperatures back into the ideal range. Perch fishing remains strong, with consistent catches reported, particularly in the Hokitika lakes where fish are plentiful. The larger rivers have also provided good fishing this summer. The low flows experienced in March, combined with the strong cicada season we have experienced, have concentrated fish around feed lines, providing excellent angling opportunities.
On the salmon fishing front, reports have been limited this season. That said, plenty of anglers are opting to focus on trout, giving the salmon population a chance to rebuild following the large drop experienced during the La Niña period from 2020–2023. Note that salmon fishing closes on March 31st for the Okarito River, Windbag Stream, and lakes Ianthe, Mapourika, Paringa, and Moeraki, so plan your trips accordingly.
With the weather settled at the moment, we’re experiencing some cracker days out on the water.
Field Work Update
Trout dive surveys have now been completed for the year, with large trout numbers remaining moderate, but a drop in smaller trout, likely a flow-on effect from the spring flooding.
If you catch a salmon, please notify us at West Coast Fish & Game. Your harvest data, combined with our spawning counts, is vital for making informed management decisions to ensure the sustainability of the fishery.
