Reel Life October 2025 - West Coast

The 2025/26 Sports Fishing Season is Underway

The 2025/26 freshwater sports fishing season started on 1 October, and two weeks in, anglers have continued to enjoy fantastic early-season success. Opening Day brought heavy morning showers and high river flows, so most active anglers headed to lakes, and they were not disappointed. The last month of unsettled weather has meant that lakes have been heavily utilised, but when rivers cleared, anglers reported some excellent fishing.

Both local and visiting anglers have found healthy numbers of trout in good condition for this time of year. Families have also been out enjoying the action, with Lake Brunner producing great results even during periods of wet weather.

Warmer than average spring temperatures and recent rains have increased trout feeding activity, making fish more catchable and giving anglers excellent early-season opportunities. Lower river reaches are fishing especially well, with seasonal bait fish bringing trout out in force. Lakes are also proving productive, particularly when rivers are running high and less accessible.

With plenty of small trout in the lower reaches, it is an ideal spot for young and beginner anglers.

For those venturing inland, the opening of headwaters and spring creeks provides a chance to explore waters that have rested over winter, offering prime early-season fishing. School holidays have also meant plenty of young anglers out on the water, enjoying the action and gaining experience.

The West Coast continues to offer excellent fishing opportunities, and it is the perfect time to get out and enjoy the season. Make sure to grab your 2025/26 fishing licence and take advantage of the great spring conditions.
